What do you feel when you look in the mirror?

Do you wince as you focus on the acne that has erupted on
your face?  Acne is naturally attributed to the teenage years.
You may have been one of the lucky ones that went through
those years with very little acne.  Life was good.  Now you are
in your twenty’s, thirty’s, or even in your forty's and all of
sudden you have acne.

What is going on?

Adult acne is more common today than you may think.  For
adults with acne, research has shown that the physical,
psychological, and social effects of this condition are causing
many problems.

So what is going on with your skin?

Acne is caused by blocked hair follicles.  In teenagers the
increase of hormones triggers the oil glands to produce more
than the hair follicle can handle.  The hair follicle becomes
blocked and acne occurs.  As you get older, your hormones
tend to balance out and you shouldn’t have hormone spikes
or acne.

Adult acne is due to an increase in androgens, a male
hormone.  The oil glands will begin to over produce, causing
the hair follicles to become blocked.  The result is acne.

This type of acne may not respond well to the
over-the-counter treatments that are available.  Adult
acne is so common, that products are now available for
this type of acne.

Acne scaring may be more prevalent with adult acne. As
your skin ages it loses collagen.  The loss of collagen
causes healing to be slower with the result being a scar.
Your skin doesn’t bounce back like it did when you were a
teenager.

Adult acne can cause psychological scarring.  We have
been conditioned to believe that acne is for teenagers.
Our culture promotes blemish free beauty and we look at
our mirror and see blemishes.  As an adult you may have a
hard time accepting acne as a daily experience.  Don’t allow
psychological scarring to happen.

Remember that millions of adults are suffering from adult
acne.  Look for over-the counter products that are targeted
for adults.  Your cosmetics should be oil free.  Cleanse your
skin once in the morning and once in the evening with a
gentle cleanser.

When over-the-counter products fail, find a good
dermatologist and begin a treatment program right for you.
There is a treatment for you, but you must take the first step
toward healing.

You owe it to yourself to look good and feel great.  With the
research and studies being completed on adult acne,
dermatologists are more knowledgeable about the causes.
More care is also being given to the psychological effects of
adult acne.
