Acne occurs when hair follicles become blocked.  The base of
each hair follicle is surrounded by oil glands.  When a
person reaches puberty the hormones increase and the oil
glands go into high gear producing more oil.  The hair
follicle becomes blocked when excess oil begins to flow
through the hair follicle.  Acne is a result of the blocked
hair follicle.

Vitamin B5, pantothenic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin
that is needed to form coenzyme-A.  Coenzyme-A is the most
important coenzyme of your body.  It is active in the
metabolism of fatty acids and in the synthesis of the sex
hormone.  Because Vitamin B5 is a water-soluble vitamin, you
must constantly replenish it within your system.

Vitamin B5 is found in small amounts in every food and in
every tissue.  The processing and cooking of food can
destroy Vitamin B5.  Coenzyme-A is a multi-tasking enzyme
within the body and the demand for it is high.  There are
few signals to warn you if you have a deficiency of Vitamin B5.

For the benefit of treating acne, Vitamin B5 aids in the
formation of coenzyme-A which has the job of metabolizing
fatty acids and synthesizing sex related hormones –
androgens.  With a deficiency of coenzyme-A, the hormones
are going to get what is available.  This leaves the fatty acids
with insufficient coenzyme-A to properly metabolize.  The
oil glands start producing more than is required by the
body.  The excess oil will then flow up the hair follicles,
which will cause a blockage.  Acne results from this excess
oil production.

Picture Vitamin B5 as a pool to be drawn from.  During
puberty the hormone levels increase in the body which would
require an increased need of the coenzyme-A.  More
coenzyme-A is leaving the pool to take care of the hormones.
The pool has been drained sufficiently which leaves less
coenzyme-A to metabolize the fatty acids.

Most individuals cease to have acne after puberty due to the
sex organs being fully developed.  The hormone activity levels
off and the amount of coenzyme-A within the body is sufficient
to properly handle the hormones and the fatty acids.

During puberty and times of increased hormone activity a
Vitamin B5 supplement will help increase the coenzyme-A
within the pool that your body is drawing from.

There is not a recommended dosage for Vitamin B5 as a daily
allowance.  Studies indicate that 10 grams a day will aid in
the treatment of acne.  Because Vitamin B5 is water-soluble,
you should take the supplement throughout the day.

Individuals that have begun to take Vitamin B5 have noticed
that their skin is less oily, their current acne lesions have
healed, and acne flare-ups have decreased.  They
have also reported that their skin is smoother and that
their pores are smaller.
